At ARA Environmental, we offer first-rate legionella training that teaches delegates about the bacteria, the potential risks associated with hot and cold water systems, and finally the measures that can be taken to prevent a legionellosis outbreak.
Our courses include both basic legionella management for those implementing precautionary measures in the workplace, such as landlords, management and maintenance staff, and advanced legionella training to those responsible persons in charge of water supplies.
The HSE ACoP L8 requires that those persons should be adequately knowledgeable and sufficiently trained in legionella management.

Basic Legionella Management – Course Overview
Our basic legionella management training is a certified five-module course designed for individuals with some responsibility for, or an interest in legionella management such as landlords, managers and operational staff.
This online course lasts approximately 2.5 hours, and each module is followed by a set of randomised multiple-choice questions. Delegates are required to answer 85% of the questions correctly in order to pass the course.
MODULE 1 – What is Legionella
The first module of the online course will introduce delegates to the legionella bacteria and legionellosis related diseases, how they are contracted and at-risk groups.
Topics covered include:
> Legionella bacteria & growth factors
> History of Legionella
> Legionnaires’ disease, susceptibility & the infection process
MODULE 2 – Risk Areas
During the second module of the course, participants will learn how to identify risk areas within water systems, where Legionella bacteria is most likely to proliferate & present a danger to health.
This module will cover:
> Main risk areas
> Legionnaires’ disease & spa pools – case study
MODULE 3 – Legislation
This module looks at the legislation surrounding legionella control and how this is applied to the workplace.
This module will explain and clarify the obligations of organisations and individuals responsible for water systems, and the consequences of failing to meet the required HSE ACoP L8 and BS8580-1:2019 standards.

MODULE 4 – Risk Management
The fourth module of our basic legionella management course looks at the actions required to eliminate and/or mitigate the risk from legionella bacteria, and the associated records that must be maintained.
Module 4 will cover:
> The processes of risk management
> The standard scheme of actions for legionella control
> Record keeping
MODULE 5 – Water System Monitoring
The concluding module looks at the practical testing required to maintain a safe, high-quality water system, including where, and testing is required.
The final model of our online legionella control will explore:
> Infrequently used outlets & post stagnation flushing
> Hot & cold water outlets
> Thermostatic Mixer Valves
> Hot Water Calorifiers
> Shower de-scaling
> Cold Water Storage Tanks
Advanced Legionella Training – Course Overview
Our more advanced legionella training is a more sufficient course tailored to those responsible persons in charge of water supplies.
It can be daunting, especially for the ‘Responsible Person’, to navigate through the many regulations covering the use of water within commercial/educational/industrial premises. Following our water hygiene training courses, knowledge of the various requirements gives attendees the confidence to access, or even design, the services needed in their particular situation.
Provided to you either at your site, at our own dedicated training suite in Faversham or on-line through our website, this course covers everything from Legionella awareness, cleaning and disinfection, cooling tower monitoring to pool and spa management.
All our trainers continue to work on a variety of sites, carrying out the tasks and programmes they later instruct. In this way, the water hygiene training courses are kept current, up-to-date and based on practical first-hand experience.
This course is designed for managers, supervisors, maintenance staff, plant operatives and engineers. On completion the attendees will know the regulatory requirements, what is required to fulfil them and how to remain compliant within regulations set out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) and Environmental Health Officers.
